Coaching in the Age of AI

Coaching in the Age of AI

Published October 06, 2026
by Positive Intelligence

If you’re a coach, you’ve probably wondered what coaching in the age of AI will look like for you and your clients. Maybe the thought feels both terrifying and exhilarating. That makes sense.

AI is already changing coaching. So the real question isn’t whether AI will change your work. It’s whether AI will shrink the role of human coaches or make human coaching more valuable than ever. The answer may be both, depending on what you offer your clients. And you get to choose how you meet this moment.

Why the Age of AI Feels So Unsettling

Imagine someone gives you one penny today and two pennies tomorrow, then keeps doubling the amount every day for 50 days. How much would you have at the end?

Most people guess a few million dollars. The real answer is more than $11 trillion.

Your gut instinct misses by trillions because your brain expects linear change, not exponential change. Humans evolved for linear change. On the savanna, the lion chasing early humans didn’t get twice as fast every year. Change came a little at a time, and our brains learned to expect that pace.

AI doesn’t move at that pace. It’s advancing exponentially, far faster than any change most of us have lived through. Your brain simply didn’t evolve to anticipate that kind of growth, so you can easily underestimate how much change lies ahead.

Why Rapid Change Wakes Up Your Saboteurs

In the Positive Intelligence® (PQ) framework, the fear-based patterns that kick in under pressure have a name: Saboteurs. You developed your Saboteurs early in life to help you feel safe and accepted. They’re your brain’s survival response, and they resist change. In survival terms, whatever kept you alive yesterday should keep you alive tomorrow.

Exponential change supercharges your Saboteurs. In the short term, you may notice more stress and fear in yourself and in the people around you, as everyone reacts to AI news and to each other’s anxiety. That’s Saboteur contagion at work.

For many people, it gets personal. As AI takes on more of the analysis, planning, and coordination that used to define a job, people start to ask:

  • Who am I if AI can do my work?
  • What value do I offer?
  • What happens to my career?

Those questions give the Judge and your other Saboteurs plenty to work with.

What Grows More Valuable as AI Improves: Your Sage

As AI takes on more of what we used to do, you’ll stand out more and more for your Sage qualities, in coaching and beyond. In the PQ framework, your Sage is the calm, wise part of you, and it has five powers:

Without mental fitness, your Saboteurs influence every role you play. With mental fitness, you lead with your Sage. That’s why you’ll need mental fitness more than ever in the age of AI.

Here’s a simple way to think about it. A surgeon uses a knife to save lives. Someone else can use the same knife to cause harm. AI is a tool, too. What matters most is that people use it with Sage intention rather than Saboteur intention.

Coaching in the Age of AI: What AI Does Well and What Humans Do Best

As you think about coaching in the age of AI, start with an honest look at what AI and human coaches each do well.

What AI Does Well

AI can already help with tasks like:

  • Taking notes and summarizing sessions
  • Researching and analyzing information
  • Recognizing patterns
  • Remembering details

AI can bring one more advantage: some people feel safer opening up to AI than to another person, at least at first.

What Human Coaches Do Best

Human coaches offer something different: empathy, listening, presence, connection, compassion, holding space, intuition, humor, and accountability.

You also feel accountability differently with a person. You can tell an app you didn’t follow through and move on. It’s much harder to look your coach in the eye and admit it.

Human coaches can also create Sage contagion. When a coach stays grounded in their Sage, the client tends to shift into Sage, too.

A coach with a strong Sage presence doesn’t just say empathetic things. They embody empathy and curiosity in their words, their tone, and the questions they ask. With that presence, a coach can shift the whole direction of a session.

And human coaches can model what’s possible. A coach who once struggled to forgive a parent can share how they did it and give a client real hope that they can do it, too. AI can’t offer that kind of lived experience.

For Coaches: How to Prepare for Coaching in the Age of AI

Start by looking at what you offer your clients. If you mainly offer information, advice, analysis, or insight, AI can already do a lot of that. But if you offer deep human connection and help clients build the mental muscles to turn insight into action, your work may become even more valuable. AI can offer insight, but clients still have to build those mental muscles through practice. Human coaching can help deepen that transformation.

For coaching in the age of AI, you don’t have to choose between two extremes: letting AI take over coaching, or insisting that humans will always do it better. The strongest coaches will let AI handle what it does well, so their clients get the benefit, and double down on what only a human can offer.

Why Coaching in the Age of AI Could Reach More People

One possibility is especially exciting: AI could dramatically expand the number of people who experience coaching. Today, only a small fraction of people worldwide work with a coach or therapist. AI can lower that barrier, so many more people get to experience reflection, curiosity, and support. For many of them, that first experience may spark a desire to go deeper, including a trusted partnership with a human coach.

That also raises the bar. As more people try AI coaching first, they’ll expect more from human coaches: deeper presence, real connection, and lasting change.

Mental fitness isn’t becoming less relevant in the age of AI. It’s becoming essential. As you prepare, focus on two priorities:

  • Double down on your own mental fitness. Your Sage is the strength you offer to every client.
  • Learn what AI can do. Try the free versions of coaching apps, and ask general AI assistants to coach you. The better you understand what AI does well, the more clearly you can show clients the value you add.

For Everyone: Coaching in the Age of AI Takes More Than Insight

In the age of AI, you’ll see more and more AI coaching apps. Many will provide a good conversation and a helpful insight. But insight and mental fitness aren’t the same thing.

An insight can help you in the moment. With mental fitness, you build the mental muscles you need to coach yourself through the next challenge. When you’re in a tense moment with your partner, you can coach yourself through it instead of going back to a chatbot for advice.

That’s what the PQ Program trains you to do. You learn to catch your Saboteurs, energize your Sage with PQ Reps, and use your Sage Powers in real time, wherever you are.

If you already use AI for self-help, that can be a helpful place to start. And when you want someone who listens, holds you accountable, and shows you what’s possible because they’ve been there, that’s where a human coach comes in.

Terrified and Exhilarated

If you still feel both terrified and exhilarated, you’re seeing AI clearly.

It’s normal to feel scared. Your brain didn’t evolve for exponential change, so your Saboteurs will show up. When they do, notice them, name them, and do a PQ Rep to shift back to your Sage.

You can feel excited about what’s possible. If people use it well, AI could help them make real progress on some of humanity’s toughest problems. Each of us gets to help shape how we use this powerful tool.

You don’t need to have everyone around you on board to make a difference. Once a tipping-point share of people meet this moment with Sage intention, they can change the trajectory of how humanity uses AI. Every person who builds mental fitness moves us closer to that tipping point.
